The string set for viola d'amore Pirastro 251020 medium is made of sheep gut as in ancient times.
These strings are made of sheep gut, which have been mentioned in the history of stringed instruments since early times. Fundamentally, even today, it is still possible to use gut strings for the lower strings of this instrument. However, the stiffness and thickness of the monofilament gut string can be a considerable handicap when playing the lower notes. It was from 1660 onwards that copper winding evolved, but nevertheless the most popular winding is silver-plated copper wire, which has the advantage of the silver coating combined with the sound quality of the copper string.
