Pirastro violone strings are made of sheep gut, which has been mentioned in the history of stringed instruments since early times. Even today, it is still possible to use gut strings for the lower strings of this instrument. However, the stiffness and thickness of the monofilament gut string can be a considerable handicap when playing the lower notes, which is why they are wound with silver.
