These strings are made from sheep gut, which has been mentioned in the history of string instruments since early times. In principle, gut strings can still be used for the lowest strings of this instrument today. However, the stiffness and thickness of the gut string monofilament can be a considerable obstacle when playing the lowest notes. The metal-wound strings used today did not begin to be developed until the middle of the 17th century, in the time of Stradivarius. To offer these high-quality, authentic gut strings, Pirastro has recreated these developments and incorporated them into its gamba string range.
