Boveda is neither a humidifier nor a desiccant – it is a true two-way humidity control system.
Boveda ensures your instrument stays at optimal humidity levels, thereby preserving all its properties intact. The Boveda pack consists of salt, water, and a gel solution contained within a membrane permeable to water vapor. In a closed environment, Boveda maintains a specific relative humidity level by either releasing or absorbing water vapor, eliminating all possible humidity fluctuations. The standard pack for wooden musical instruments is designed to maintain a relative humidity of 49%.
Why is controlling relative humidity important?
There is an ideal relative humidity for almost everything. The ideal relative humidity can vary widely for different products and objects, as well as their tolerance to humidity fluctuations. For example, coffee, nuts, and dried fruits for consumption are best kept in a dry environment between 30% and 40% relative humidity, while wooden products are best preserved in an environment around 50% relative humidity.
When the surrounding relative humidity is too high or too low for a specific product, that product will absorb or release water vapor into the surrounding air. This means there is a potential loss of the natural properties of the raw materials used in making the products. In the case of musical instruments, cracks and breaks can occur in the wood. Boveda, with its two-way humidity control, prevents damage caused by humidity fluctuations, thus preserving the characteristics of the products while they are stored.
Why use Boveda?
Boveda provides incredible benefits for preserving your instrument. Achieving the best environmental conditions has never been so simple and practical, since Boveda requires no installation or maintenance.
How to use Boveda?
Boveda is extremely easy to use, requires zero maintenance, and can be used with a wide variety of instruments: electric and acoustic guitars, violins, violas, cellos, wind instruments, and more.
How many Boveda packs do I need?
Boveda recommends using a specific number of packs depending on your instrument and the type of climate. For a violin or viola, you will need between 1 and 2 Boveda packs (a Small Starter Kit is sufficient), while for a cello or double bass, you will need between 2 and 4 packs (1 unit of the Large Starter Kit). For a classical or acoustic guitar, it is also recommended to use between 2 and 4 packs.
