These strings are made from sheep gut, a material mentioned in the history of stringed instruments since early times. In principle, gut strings can still be used today for this instrument’s lowest strings. However, the stiffness and thickness of a monofilament gut string can present a considerable obstacle when playing the lowest notes. The metal-wound strings used today did not begin to be developed until the mid-17th century, in Stradivarius’s era. To offer these high-quality, authentic gut strings, Pirastro has recreated these developments and incorporated them into its range of viol strings.
